An oral vitamin A suspension; vitamin A is a nutrient, not a vaccine.

“Vitamin A 50,000 IU Suspension.” Verify the complete composition panel for IU per ml.
Ask the clinician to review the child’s age, diet and supplementation record.
Use the prescribed IU and measured ml. A drop count cannot be inferred from a front label.

Vitamin A supports normal vision, immune function and growth. It is involved in the retina’s response to light and the maintenance of the eye’s surface and other tissues. These physiological roles do not mean extra vitamin A improves eyesight or prevents infections in every well-nourished child.
NIH: vitamin A functions and nutrition
WHO recommends high-dose supplementation for children aged 6–59 months in settings where vitamin A deficiency is a public-health problem. This is a targeted public-health intervention, alongside nutrition and health care.
WHO: supplementation in children 6–59 months
Deficiency can cause difficulty seeing in dim light and eye-surface damage. New vision problems, an abnormal eye surface or a child who seems unwell require clinical assessment; buying drops is not a substitute for diagnosis.
Clinicians may use vitamin A as supportive care for diagnosed childhood measles. This treatment has a separate age-based regimen. Vitamin A does not prevent measles and does not replace MR or MMR vaccination.
“Infant” covers a wide age range. A recommendation for a 9-month-old baby cannot automatically be applied to a newborn, a younger infant or an older child.
| Age group | Guidance to discuss |
|---|---|
| Newborns: first 28 days | WHO does not recommend routine neonatal supplementation as a public-health measure to reduce illness and mortality. |
| Infants aged 1–5 months | WHO also does not recommend routine supplementation for that public-health purpose in this age group. |
| 6–8 months | WHO’s 6–59-month guidance applies in deficiency-affected settings. India’s routine preventive programme begins at 9 months. |
| 9 months to 5 years | Review the Indian programme schedule, prior doses and the actual product label with the care team. |
| Children older than 5 years | Do not extend the under-five high-dose schedule automatically. Discuss dietary intake and any diagnosed deficiency. |
India’s NHM guidance describes nine preventive doses up to age 5. The schedule below refers to the national programme; it is not a personalised AVT prescription.
| Programme contact | Vitamin A amount | Timing |
|---|---|---|
| First dose | 100,000 IU (1 lakh IU) | 9 months, at the relevant immunisation contact |
| Second dose | 200,000 IU (2 lakh IU) | 16–18 months in NHM’s 2023 IMNCI module |
| Third to ninth doses | 200,000 IU at each scheduled contact | 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54 and 60 months |

Different oral preparations can have different concentrations. A programme’s ml instruction must not be copied onto AVT Drops without verifying IU per ml. Have the clinician record the actual amount and date.
Bring the child’s health card, including doses received at government facilities or campaigns. The care team should reconcile missed or uncertain records before another administration.
The correct AVT Drops dosage depends on the indication, age, complete label, prior supplementation and the prescriber’s instructions. The visible front label alone does not establish the concentration basis. This page therefore does not give a guessed ml or drops-per-dose instruction.
MedlinePlus: following vitamin A instructions and precautions
Dietary requirements, a periodic prevention programme and treatment of a diagnosed deficiency are different clinical contexts. The high-dose programme table is not a daily-use instruction. AVT Drops are also different from vitamin D drops and combination multivitamin drops.
Vitamin A is fat-soluble and excess amounts can accumulate. Too much may cause nausea, severe headache, blurred vision or unusual drowsiness; repeated excess can harm the liver and other tissues.
Discuss all medicines and supplements before use, particularly products that already contain vitamin A. Do not combine AVT with another vitamin A product, cod-liver oil or multivitamins without checking the total intake with the clinician.
If an excessive amount may have been given, seek urgent medical advice and bring the bottle. A child who is hard to wake, has breathing difficulty or has a seizure needs emergency care.

Follow the supplied pack’s storage and after-opening instructions. Keep the bottle out of children’s reach, check expiry and ask the pharmacist how long an opened bottle may be used. Do not assume it has the same storage requirements as a vaccine.
Age-appropriate foods can include orange and yellow vegetables, dark green leafy vegetables, eggs and dairy where suitable. These provide different forms of vitamin A. Feeding advice should account for the child’s age, allergies and diet; supplementation does not replace balanced nutrition.
Current catalogue charge: check the booking catalogue. The price card reads the active AVT Drops entry, so admin price changes appear here automatically.
Confirm the supplied pack, what the listed charge includes, stock and any consultation or home-visit fee. An enquiry does not confirm that supplementation is appropriate or that an appointment is available.

AVT Drops are an oral vitamin A product. A clinician may recommend vitamin A for supplementation or a diagnosed deficiency. The reason, amount and frequency should be confirmed for the individual child.
Age and clinical need matter. India’s preventive programme starts at 9 months. WHO guidance for deficiency-affected settings covers ages 6–59 months. Neither is permission to give an AVT dose without checking the label and prior doses.
Do not start AVT Drops routinely for a newborn. WHO does not recommend neonatal vitamin A supplementation as a public-health intervention to reduce illness and mortality. A diagnosed condition may require a separate specialist plan.
India’s preventive programme uses 100,000 IU at 9 months. This is programme guidance, not an AVT volume or drop-count prescription. The clinician must verify the bottle’s IU per ml and previous supplementation.
India’s programme schedules periodic supplementation up to age 5. The child’s recorded last dose and current health determine the next appointment. It is not a daily high-dose regimen.
Use the amount prescribed in IU and ml after the concentration is checked. A front label saying 50,000 IU is insufficient to establish IU per drop. Do not use a household spoon or guess a drop count.
No. Vitamin A and vitamin D are different nutrients. Multivitamin drops contain a combination of ingredients; check for overlapping vitamin A before combining products.
No. Vitamin A is a nutrient supplement. It can be provided during health or immunisation visits, but does not replace the MR or MMR vaccine.
Vitamin A does not prevent measles. Clinicians may use it in supportive management of diagnosed measles, using a separate treatment regimen. Measles vaccination remains essential.
Show the dated record to the clinician before another dose. Include supplements, fortified feeds and medicines when discussing the plan; avoid duplicating a recent high-dose administration.
Excess vitamin A can be harmful. Vomiting, severe headache, unusual drowsiness or other concerning symptoms after a dose require prompt medical advice. Suspected overdose needs urgent assessment.
Contact the clinic with the last recorded dose and the child’s age. Do not double a dose or combine bottles to catch up.
Follow the actual pack’s temperature, light-protection and after-opening instructions. Keep it out of children’s reach, use the correct measuring device and check expiry before use.
