👥 Who Should Get FLUARIX SH?
The influenza vaccine is recommended for everyone 6 months and older annually. FLUARIX SH with WHO Southern Hemisphere strains is especially important for:

💡 Split Virion Technology: FLUARIX uses split virion technology — the influenza virus is grown in eggs, inactivated with formaldehyde, then split using a detergent (Triton X-100) into fragments. This creates a vaccine containing the HA, NA and internal viral proteins, providing broader immune stimulation while being safer than whole-virus vaccines. Well tolerated even in children and elderly.

Split Virion Antigens Injected Intramuscularly
0.5 mL of FLUARIX SH injected IM into the deltoid. The dose delivers fragmented influenza virus particles (split virion) from all 3 WHO SH strains — H1N1, H3N2, and B/Victoria. Each strain contributes 15 µg of Haemagglutinin (HA) antigen. No live virus is present — the vaccine cannot cause influenza.

Immune System Recognition and Processing
Antigen-presenting cells (macrophages, dendritic cells) at the injection site engulf the split virion fragments. They process the HA, NA and internal viral proteins, then present antigens on MHC class II receptors to T-helper cells (CD4+), initiating the adaptive immune response against all 3 strains.

Strain-Specific Anti-HA Antibodies Generated
B-lymphocytes produce high-titre strain-specific IgG antibodies — primarily anti-HA antibodies targeting H1N1, H3N2 and B/Victoria. These anti-HA antibodies neutralize influenza virus by blocking the HA protein from binding to respiratory epithelial cells, preventing infection from establishing.

Seasonal Protection Established in 10–14 Days
Protective antibody levels develop within 10–14 days post-vaccination. Memory B-cells and T-cells provide immune memory. However, antibody levels wane over 6–12 months AND new influenza strains emerge each season — making annual vaccination with the current season formulation essential for continued protection.
✅ Cannot cause flu: FLUARIX SH is a completely inactivated, split virion vaccine — no live or attenuated virus whatsoever. It is physiologically impossible to contract influenza from FLUARIX. Post-vaccination symptoms like mild soreness or low-grade fever are normal immune activation responses, not flu infection.
