👥 Who Should Get Priorix
Priorix is recommended as part of the national and IAP childhood immunization schedule, and is important for several other groups too:
Infants & Children (9–18 months)
First dose at 9–12 months, second dose at 15–18 months as per the IAP/national immunization schedule. Protects against three serious childhood viral infections in a single injection.
Older Children & Adolescents
Catch-up doses are recommended if the primary schedule was missed, delayed or incomplete. Two doses at least 4 weeks apart are needed for full protection.
Adults Without Documented Immunity
Adults with no record of MMR vaccination or natural infection should receive 2 doses, particularly healthcare workers, teachers and those in shared living settings.
Women Planning Pregnancy
Rubella infection during pregnancy can cause serious birth defects. Vaccination should be completed at least 1 month before conception — Priorix cannot be given during pregnancy itself.
International Travellers
Measles outbreaks continue to occur worldwide. Travellers without documented MMR immunity should be vaccinated at least 2 weeks before international travel.
Healthcare Workers
Staff in clinical settings are at higher risk of exposure to measles, mumps and rubella. Annual health checks and documented MMR immunity are commonly required by hospitals.

⚙️ How Does Priorix Work?

Live Attenuated Virus Injected
0.5 mL of reconstituted Priorix is injected subcutaneously or intramuscularly. The dose delivers weakened (attenuated) measles, mumps and rubella viruses that can replicate briefly but are too weak to cause the actual diseases in healthy, immunocompetent individuals.

Mild Immune Activation
The weakened viruses trigger the immune system to mount a response, similar to a natural infection but without the severity. This is why mild fever or rash may sometimes appear 5–12 days after vaccination — this is expected and not the actual disease.

Antibody & Memory Cell Formation
The immune system produces antibodies specific to measles, mumps and rubella, along with long-lived memory B-cells and T-cells that can recognise and fight these viruses in the future.

Long-Lasting Protection After 2 Doses
A single dose provides good protection, but a completed 2-dose schedule provides strong, long-lasting immunity against all three viral infections and their complications, and is considered protective for life in most people.
✅ Cannot cause the natural disease in healthy people: Priorix uses highly weakened, attenuated strains — it does not cause measles, mumps or rubella disease in healthy, immunocompetent individuals. Mild vaccine-related symptoms like low-grade fever or a faint rash are normal immune activation responses, not the actual infection. Live vaccines like Priorix are not given to individuals with severe immunodeficiency — see Precautions below.
⚠️ Priorix Side Effects
Priorix has a well-established safety record built over more than two decades of global use. Most reactions are mild and self-limiting.
Common (Injection Site & Mild)
Pain, redness and swelling at the injection site; mild fever; irritability in infants.
Less Common (1–3 Weeks Later)
Mild measles-like rash; transient joint pain or swelling (more common in adult women); mild swelling of the parotid glands.
Rare
Febrile seizures (uncommon, usually benign); temporary low platelet count (thrombocytopenia).
Seek Medical Attention Immediately
- 🤚 Severe allergic reaction (neomycin/egg protein)
- 😵 Syncope (fainting) post-injection
- 🧠 Encephalitis — extremely rare
- 🚨 Anaphylaxis (extremely rare)

🚫 Precautions and Contraindications
Do NOT give Priorix if:
- Known severe allergic reaction to a previous dose, neomycin, or egg protein
- Currently pregnant, or planning pregnancy within 1 month of vaccination
- Severe immunodeficiency (e.g. leukaemia, lymphoma, high-dose steroids, untreated HIV with severe immunosuppression)
- Active untreated tuberculosis
- Moderate to severe acute illness or high fever — defer until recovered
- Recent receipt of blood products, immunoglobulins or another live vaccine — inform your VacciHub nurse to check spacing requirements
⚠️ Being a live vaccine: Priorix must not be given to individuals with severe immunodeficiency, as the weakened viruses could theoretically cause illness in someone whose immune system cannot control them. Always disclose your full medical history to the VacciHub nurse before vaccination.
