Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection worldwide. While most HPV infections clear on their own, persistent infection with high-risk strains can lead to cervical cancer, anal cancer, oropharyngeal cancer, and other HPV-related diseases. Low-risk strains cause genital warts. Gardasil targets the four most clinically significant HPV types:
The most dangerous HPV strain. Responsible for ~50–60% of all cervical cancers and a significant share of vulvar, vaginal, anal, penile and oropharyngeal cancers worldwide.
Causes ~10–15% of cervical cancers. Together with Type 16, responsible for ~70% of all cervical cancer cases globally. Also linked to adenocarcinoma of the cervix.
Primary cause of genital warts (condylomata acuminata). Not directly linked to cancer but causes significant physical discomfort, stigma and repeated treatments.
Along with Type 6, responsible for ~90% of genital warts. Also causes recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) – a rare but serious condition affecting the airways.
Gardasil is a recombinant, non-infectious (no live virus) subunit vaccine. It works through a 4-step immunological process:
Gardasil has an excellent safety profile. It has been administered to hundreds of millions of people globally since 2006.
