6 Antigens · DTaP-IPV-HepB-Hib · Store 2–8°C · Do Not Freeze · Sanofi
Hexaxim is given as part of the routine infant immunization schedule and is especially useful for families who want to reduce the number of separate injections. It is recommended for:
All healthy infants beginning their primary vaccination series, typically starting at 6 weeks of age, benefit from hexavalent protection against 6 diseases in one shot.
Children who have missed or delayed doses of DTaP, Hepatitis B, IPV or Hib vaccines can catch up efficiently using a combination hexavalent dose.
Preterm infants can generally receive Hexaxim on the same chronological age schedule as full-term infants, as advised by their pediatrician.
Hexaxim combines 6 antigens into a single injection instead of 3–4 separate shots, reducing visit-day distress and the number of pricks for the baby.
Infants who need an additional Hepatitis B dose alongside their DTaP-IPV-Hib series can receive both through Hexaxim in one visit.
Children who completed their 3-dose primary series with a hexavalent or pentavalent vaccine are due for a booster dose between 15–18 months of age.
Each 0.5 mL dose of Hexaxim typically contains the following active antigens and excipients, as per the manufacturer's product information:
| Component | Quantity | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| ACTIVE ANTIGENS | ||
| Diphtheria Toxoid | Not less than 20 IU | Purified and detoxified diphtheria toxin |
| Tetanus Toxoid | Not less than 40 IU | Purified and detoxified tetanus toxin |
| Acellular Pertussis Antigens | Pertussis Toxoid + FHA | Purified components, not whole-cell pertussis |
| Hepatitis B Surface Antigen (rDNA) | 10 mcg | Recombinant HBsAg, adsorbed |
| Inactivated Poliovirus (IPV) | Types 1, 2 and 3 | Inactivated – cannot cause polio |
| Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) Polysaccharide | 12 mcg, conjugated | Conjugated to tetanus protein for improved immune response |
| EXCIPIENTS | ||
| Aluminium Hydroxide (adjuvant) | q.s. | Enhances and prolongs immune response |
| Formaldehyde (trace, from manufacturing) | <12.5 mcg | Used to inactivate poliovirus and detoxify toxoids |
| 2-Phenoxyethanol | 2.5 mg | Preservative in the IPV component |
| Water for Injection | q.s. to 0.5 mL | Diluent / suspension medium |
Note: Exact excipient quantities may vary slightly by batch. Always refer to the manufacturer's package insert supplied with your dose for complete, batch-specific composition details.
| Group | Number of Doses | Timing | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary series (standard infant schedule) | 3 Doses | 6, 10 and 14 weeks of age | Can also follow a 2, 4, 6 month schedule as per local guidelines |
| Booster dose | 1 Dose | 15–18 months of age | Essential to complete full protection and extend duration of immunity |
| Catch-up (started late, <1 year old) | 3 Doses | 4–8 weeks apart, then booster after 6 months | As advised by pediatrician based on age at first dose |
| Catch-up (over 1 year, incomplete series) | Varies | Individualized schedule | Remaining doses completed based on doses already received |
| Premature infants | 3 Doses | Same chronological age schedule | No dose adjustment needed for prematurity in most cases |
| Children who received pentavalent earlier | Consult doctor | Individualized | Switching between hexavalent and pentavalent brands mid-series should be guided by a pediatrician |
As with any combination vaccine, mild reactions are common and expected as the immune system responds to six antigens at once. Serious reactions are rare.
